Every so often, Endless likes to have our athletes tell us about their experience with us in their own words. The following story is from Paul Ems.
No way, I’m almost 54 years old. My body won’t be able to take the pounding. My knees won’t hold up. I just can’t do it.
negative thoughts consumed my head anytime CrossFit was brought up in casual
conversations among friends. Of course I wanted to do it, but I was
convinced that my body wouldn’t let me do it. I had spent four years
working out four days a week in a boot camp style class and absolutely loved it
even though I struggled with sprinting, squatting, lunges, and jumps due to bad
knees and flexibility. I have been told countless times by doctors that I
need knee replacement surgery because I no longer have any cartilage in my left
knee. My knees have never kept me from working out but I was pretty
limited on what I could do.
A couple of friends had been talking about a new CrossFit box in the area and invited me to attend the open house. I showed up, watched the WOD, and met with Kim, Mike, Callee, and Jimmy. That minute that I stepped into the box was life changer. I was welcomed with big smiles from these strangers as if I was a family member. I was overwhelmed with how nice everybody was and the wealth of knowledge of all the coaches. Before I left the open house I was invited to come back for “Friends Friday”. I was excited to go and give a test run. My first “Friends Friday” was on June 7, 2013 and I signed up for my first two months that next Tuesday. I explained to them what issues I had been having and that full range of motion just wasn’t possible with my knee. Mike just smiled, patted my on my shoulder and told me we would work on it. It might take some time but we’ll scale the WOD’s and do it right.
For the first month and a half, every WOD scared the hell out of me but I kept coming back. My WOD’s were scaled and the coaches would stop me mid WOD to correct my form because form is everything! The staff was impressed with my dedication. Mike would tell me that I was “hooked”. When I had to miss a WOD due to another commitment, I really missed not being there. I knew then that I was hooked. The amount of support and encouragement from both the staff and other members is indescribable. I love how everybody supports and motivates each other to push through and finish strong.
I still continue to scale my WOD’s if needed but I have accomplished so much more than I ever thought was possible at Endless Crossfit. In just nine weeks I have gone from walking during the WOD’s to jogging. I went from squatting to a 20” box to squatting below parallel to a ball. I went from stepping up on 14” box to jumping on a 24” box. I am also able to go full range of motion on my lunges. Most importantly, in the past nine weeks I have met some amazing people and learned that nothing is impossible.
